Rooney out for 6 weeks

By worldcuppers at 30 April, 2006, 6:46 am

It was confirmed that England’s Wayne Rooney has fractured the base of the fourth metatarsal on his right foot and he will be out for six weeks. As the World Cup is also exactly six weeks away, outgoing England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has to decide whether to take the 20-year-old to Germany this summer.

My thoughts:

For me the obvious is there though, it will be a very big gamble to take him to the World Cup. When Rooney fractured the fifth metatarsal on the same foot in the Euro 2004 quarter-final defeat to Portugal, it was 10 weeks before he played again. Even he recovered in 6 weeks time, will he rediscover his magic soon enough?

What is it with England players with metatarsal injury before big tournament anyway? Before World Cup 2002, it was David Beckham, for Euro 2004 it was Gary Neville. Oh, I do believe I haven’t heard the word metatarsal pre-2000.

What a pity. The English are cursed when it comes to football.

The irony of it all is just how many metatarsal injuries England has been having- see: ‘
